and many of them have tried ineffective or unhealthy treatments only to worsen their overall health. In this post I will tell you about 5 effective and healthy herbal treatments for nail fungus and how to prepare them.
What is Nail Fungus?
This is the most usual disease of the nails. It is a fungal infection that affects one or more of your toe or fingernails. The typical symptoms include crumbling edges, thickening and discoloration of the nail. It may also cause pain and foul smell.
Causes for Nail Fungus
Most commonly nail fungus is caused by fungi. These microscopic organisms get into the skin through tiny separations or small cuts between the nail bad and the nail. The warm and moist environment they find there is perfect not only for their survival but for their growth as well.
As mentioned, fungi love warm and moist environment so baths (public especially), swimming pools and steam rooms are some of the places you need to avoid or at least be careful when using them.
The main reasons people get infected with nail fungus include wearing sweaty or wet trainers, living in a humid and warm climate, having a poor immune system, damaged nails and others.
Treatments of Nail Fungus
Traditional medicine treats nail fungus with oral medications, topical medications and surgery (in very severe cases).
The oral medications are an effective way to cure the infection, but they should only be used on moderate to severe cases due to their side effects which include liver damage and skin rashes. Some of the most effective pills are terbinafine (Lamisil) and itraconazole (Sporanox).
Topical medications are used for milder cases of nail fungus and to prevent the reoccurrence of the infection. They are normally in the form of creams, gels and lotions and are applied on the nail and the skin around it. Some of the best topical medications include terbinafine (Lamisil) and ciclopirox (Penlac)
Nail fungus surgery is the act of removing the infected nail and is only used in very severe and extremely painful cases. Once the nail is removed you have to wait up to an year for the new one to grow and in the meantime you should still apply topical medications (or the herbal treatments you will read about in a second) to prevent the infection from returning.
As you have probably noticed if you have been reading my blogs, I always prefer treating any condition with natural means or at least medications that are 100% natural. This case is no different. There are some very effective natural treatments for nail fungus and in this post I will focus on 5 herbal remedies.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is great for treating nail fungus and a variety of other infections thanks to its antiseptic and antifungal properties. In order to treat your nail fungus you just need to dilute it by mixing it with almond oil, olive oil or thyme oil. After that rub the oil on the affected area for 10 minutes and then scrub the nail with a tooth brush. This herbal treatment can be especially useful if the infection is still fresh.
Garlic is known to be quite the antifungal and antibiotic herb. This is mainly thanks to a compound called allicin, which possesses strong fungicide properties. For maximum results use both internal and external garlic treatment. Internal treatment of course means that you should eat at least a clove of garlic a day. An external treatment can be done in a variety of ways. You can create your own garlic oil by crushing garlic cloves and mixing them with olive oil, you can make a garlic juice and rub it into the affected area with a cotton ball, and you can also crush a clove and again rub it on your nail. This two-way treatment (external and internal) will help you get rid of the persistent nail fungus and improve your overall health and immune system.
Oregano is an herb with very strong fungicidal, anti-bacterial, anti-parasitical and anti-viral properties. They make its oil a very effective treatment for nail fungus. It is especially important to dilute this particular oil because it is very strong and will irritate your skin.
As with the other oils you can use a carrier. Your cheapest option is olive oil, but if you don’t mind spending some more cash you can go with jojoba oil as it is very beneficial to the skin. Just mix 2-3 drops of oregano oil with a teaspoon your carrier oil and rub it over the affected nail.
Lavender oil is yet another essential oil that has the potential of being a great remedy for various skin infections. Treating specifically nail fungus with it has been backed with several studies. First, a study that was conducted in the University of Coimbra (Portugal) discovered that thanks to several compounds, lavender oil is able to stop the growth of the fungi and damage their cell membranes causing them to die off. Another study, published in the Medical Mycology (scientific journal) showed that the essential oil had the ability to cure nail fungus thanks to its antiseptic properties.
In order to treat your infection with lavender oil, you need to take equal amounts of it and a carrier such as olive oil and warm them slightly. Once it’s warm just dab it with a cotton ball under, on top and around your nail up to 3 times a day.
This herb is being used to treat nail fungus thanks to its antiseptic, anti-fungal, astringent, anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties. Many people report that it kills the fungus bacteria within minutes after being applied. A sign of this is the way the area around the nail turns black.
Again, before applying lemongrass oil, you should dilute it with a proper carrier oil. After that just rub it into the nail.
All of these herbal treatments can provide cheap and effective substitutes for the traditional medications. Most importantly they are side effect free if used correctly. If you are consistent with them they can really help you get rid of one of the most annoying and persistent conditions.
Another great natural treatment that I love to recommend to people that want to achieve fast results is ZetaClear. It is a topical solution and an oral homeopathic spray. You are already familiar with some of its ingredients.
The topical cream contains and the homeopathic spray contain ingredients like tea tree oil, jojoba oil, vitamin E oil, clove oil, lemongrass oil. Thanks to the spray you are able to get these and other natural infection cures in your bloodstream and attack the fungus from the inside as well as from the outside.
I really believe that such a system is the next best thing (right after the herbs I recommended) and thanks to the combination of a spray and a topical solution it can do wonders for you. I know many people who are extremely happy not only with how effectively it treated their fungus, but also how beautiful their nails and skin looked after that. But enough about that, if you want to read more visit ZetaClear’s official page here.
I hope that I was able to help you out with my suggestions and I will be very grateful if you propose your own treatments in the comment box or just let us know how these herbs worked for you. Thanks for reading and good luck.
