The Beginner's Guide to Insomnia - What is it, 8 Causes, Simple Tips for Fixing Insomnia and More!

girl can't sleepSleep is something that always manages to make you feel better; especially when you are tired or stressed.
As the age-old adage for making-tough-decisions-and-getting-good-ideas-when-you-just-won't goes - 'sleep on it', you require adequate sleep to refresh your muddled, overworked mind and get clarity in the morning.

A profound comfortable sleep is essential for good health. Sleep helps in improving your mood; it energizes you, improves memory, lowers your stress, strengthens your immune system and of course helps reduce your dark circles. These are just some of the many benefits.

This means that proper quality and quantity of sleep are vitally important.

Unfortunately sometimes we find difficulty in sleeping. We wake up at night and are not able to sleep again. We keep tossing and turning for a long time in our beds, trying unsuccessfully to fall asleep!

We wake up too early in the morning with under-eye bags from hell!

Some people have trouble falling asleep, while others have trouble staying asleep. We ignore such situations confirming ourselves that this happens sometimes and we will be alright the next day. And this vicious cycle continues…

But do you know these are classic symptoms of insomnia? You feel tired and not active enough during the day and even have headaches.

You start having physical and psychological problems like poor concentration and focus, difficulty in memorizing things, irritability etc.

This is insomnia.

Insomnia means "no sleep". It is a disorder where one is not able to sleep or if sleeps comes, then it is only for a few short hours. Or an even more deceptive fact is that you might actually get all the sleep you need but still suffer from insomnia, only because you can't reach the most important deep state of sleep. In such an event you would feel really tired upon waking. This problem is really common nowadays. It is not a physical disease.

It is actually a message from your body telling you something is wrong. If you have insomnia, you may lie awake for a long time before you fall asleep, sleep for only short periods, be awake for much of the night, feel as if you have not slept at all and wake up too early or simply not reach the much needed state of deep sleep.

Insomnia can also affect your daily activities and cause serious, even dangerous, problems in your day-to-day life.

For example, you may feel drowsy while driving! You can have trouble performing physical or mental exercises! In fact, insomnia can even lead to heart diseases!

Causes of Insomnia

  • Insomnia usually happens when you are under a lot of stress
  • Not physically, mentally or emotionally well
  • Lacking some key nutrients like Vitamin D, E and B complex, magnessium, calcium and zink.
  • Not in a comfortable environment
  • have travelled to a new place, etc.
  • Have too many things on your mind. Sometimes even I find my thoughts running around in my mind, not letting me to fall a sleep.
  • Your sleep issues may also be due to anxiety or depression
  • Changes in your work schedule
  • Uncomfortable room temperature
  • If you have recently gotten rid of an addiction, like stopped your usage of any drug or alcohol, you may also have to face this not-being-able-to-sleep nightmare (mostly because of the cravings)!

This is not a thing to ignore (and you won't be able to though).

So, what are you to do when you find yourself unable to sleep and battling insomnia for nights together?!

Work on your insomnia problems. Follow a proper bedtime routine. See that you do not have green or black tea, coffee, or chocolate before going to bed. Sleep in a dark, quite room. Drink warm milk or have a warm bath before going to bed.

These tips will make you sleep much better and will help you combat your sleep issues.
