Causes, Symptoms And Relief For Your Joint Pain

joint pain
If you are suffering from joint pain, you are one of the almost 350 million people worldwide that have to live with that condition.

Joint pain is a general term people use to describe different conditions (such as arthritis) leading to joint inflammation. Other conditions that lead to this type of pain include injuries, tumors, gouts and others. But before we continue discussing the causes, symptoms and treatments of joint pain, I would like to make sure that we all know what exactly are our joints.

The joint is what forms connections between our bones. This connection, which is generally formed by cartilage, ligaments, tendons and bones within the joint, is what absorbs movements so that our bones don't rub in to each other every time we move. This is exactly where joint pains occur. The cartilage tissue is either damaged from aging, injury or infection in a way that doesn't allow it to do it's normal function. So if you want to relieve joint pain, the cartilage is exactly what you need to take care of. But more on that in a moment. First lets have a look at the common symptoms.

Symptoms of joint pain include

  • Well of course the first one is pain in your joints...
  • Swelling
  • Warmth in the joint area
  • Stiffness
  • Sudden pain when a storm is coming (I will write another post explaining why your joints hurt right before a storm)
If you feel any of those symptoms you better turn to your doctor as soon as possible so he can prescribe an adequate treatment. These treatments will largely depend on what is causing your joint pain. If the problem is caused by an injury, treatments will include pain control and anti-inflammatory medications, cold applications and physical therapy like massaging.
  •  My advice is that you apply ice on the joint several times a day for as long as 15 minutes
  • Avoid activities
  • Keep the joint elevated
  • Compress the joint

If joint pain is caused by arthritis there is a bigger variety of treatments that include
  • Lifestyle changes - This means changing your diet (eating lots of fruits and vegetables, foods high in healthy fats like fish, nuts, olive oil and others, ), exercising (stretching to increase flexibility , low impact aerobics, strength training to increase the strength of the muscles supporting your joints), losing weight in order to decrease pressure on the joints, improving your sleeping pattern and others.
  • Physical therapy - This includes massaging, water therapy and again exercising to increase strength and range of motion of the muscles surrounding the joint.
  • Oral medications - These include over the counter medications like Acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), natural supplements and prescription medicines.
    • Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is a drug used to reduce pain. Possible side effect from it is liver damage.
    • Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs are also used to relieve the pain symptoms of arthritis. Ibuprofen, Aspirin and Naproxen.
    • They also have side effects, in fact they are a bit more than Acetaminophen's and include- heart attack, stroke, kidney damage and others.
    • Natural Supplements are usually in the form of pills or tablets. They use extracts from different plants and most importantly Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM. These ingredients not only relieve the pain, but also act towards improving the health of your connecting tissue and cartilage. Usually these supplements are a preferred option for people who would also like to skip the side effects of the other medications used for joint pain. Because of their natural ingredient list, these solutions have no side effects. Such a supplement is Joint Relief Solution. For the reasons mentioned above, I invite you to have a look at it by clicking HERE.
    • Corticosteroids, which are used to reduce inflammations and suppress the immune system (you can probably figure out the effects of this on your general health).
    • Disease-Modifying drugs - Unlike the medications used for pain relief, this type of drugs actually slow joint damage. Their side effect is an increased risk of more severe infections.
  • Surgery - A bit of a more drastic measure than the ones described previously. It is generally used when medications don't help. There are 4 types of surgery- Arthroscopy ( your doctor will creat a small cut and cleans the joint form the inside), Osteotomy ( removing a section of your bone to produce better joint alignement- it is used to perserve the joint and delay arthroscopy), Arthroplasty ( a surgery that replaces your worn out joint with a plastic or metal one) and Joint fusion ( removing the joint and connecting the ends of the bones in order to infuse them in to one )
This is my list of ways that joint pain can be relieved. I hope it is helpful to you. I would love if the readers that have experience with any of these treatments share their results by leaving a comment. This way we can be even more helpful to everyone.

Don't sit in front of the computer hours and hours continuously. The best way to avoid back pain if you use a computer a
lot is to get up and move around frequently. Take stretching breaks every 30 minutes to 1 hour, if you can.

I agree with you Sophia... I am an architect and I sit in front of the computer about 8-10 hours per day. I had arthritis before. My hands and knees were swollen and painful. I also felt lower back and hip joint pain.. I consulted to physical therapist and chiropractor... they had me go through different therapies but it didn't work for me... I guess, it is because I still tried to run few miles despite of my aching knees... My arthritis was healed after I finish my stem cell therapy with Dr Grossman and up to this day, I never had major issues with my joints again and hopefully, no more joint pains ever.
