The 3 Crucial Steps That Truly Get Rid of Cellulite

The appearance of cellulite is caused by fat deposits created due to the accumulation of toxins, water and of
course fats. This is what makes it much harder to burn than other fat on your body. In order to live a cellulite-free life you need to address these 3 reasons for orange skin, as cellulite is also referred to.

Obviously, a cellulite cream or any other topical solution will not suffice; instead you can use one as a supplement to boost your efforts. What should these efforts be?

As I said cellulite is caused by the build-up of toxins, fats and excess water retention. This means that by finding the best ways to detoxify, burn fat and free your body of excess water, you will be on your way to getting rid of cellulite for good.

Step 1 – The Lifestyle

The first and most important step is to change your lifestyle.

Limiting your exposure to toxins is among these lifestyle changes. This means that you may need to stay away from processed and sugary foods, try to use all natural household products, drink less alcohol, quit smoking and other activities that may cause toxic build-up. Furthermore, eating foods with detoxifying properties like high fiber foods, raw fruits and veggies, and drinking plenty of water will also help eliminating the waste in your system. But more on diet in the next step.

Another crucial lifestyle change is adding the proper type of exercises and performing them at least 3 times a week. The right type of exercises will help burn the fats and tone the tissue in the affected areas. They will also help fight stress, which also causes the accumulation of toxins in your body. More on working out in step 3.

The third important thing you need to take care of is stress. Finding a way to release stress can really help you get rid of cellulite and improve your overall health. Many people do this by meditating; however, the key is not in doing what works for others, but what works for you. Just think about what made you happy and relaxed the last time. It may be that this is your best stress relief “medication” and that you should find a way to fit it in your busy schedule on a regular basis.

Step 2 – The Diet

This is a crucial step to winning the war against cellulite. The proper anti-cellulite diet can help all 3 components of the cellulite treatment.

First, as mentioned above, eating the right foods can boost detoxification and skipping the wrong foods can prevent toxic build-up in the first place.

The right foods (those that you need to consume in order to detox) include apples, citrus fruits, beetroot, ginger, basil, parsley, pineapples, nuts, onion, garlic, cinnamon, avocados, berries, legumes and other high fiber foods.

The wrong foods (the ones that contain toxins) include refined flour, sodas, processed salt, “fat-free” foods, GMOs, foods that contain high-fructose corn syrup and others unnatural foods. As far as drinking goes you can add green tea and increase water consumption.

Second, the right diet will get the right results in terms of reducing your body fat percentage.

Consuming a good amount of lean protein and healthy fats will improve your metabolism and turn your body into a fat burning machine. The best sources of protein include lean meats like chicken and turkey breast, egg whites, legumes and seafood. A good rule of thumb is that 40-50% of your daily calorie intake should come from lean proteins, especially if you are working out.

The so called healthy fats are the ones that are good for you and are also known as monosaturated and polysaturated. You can find these in olive oil, avocados, nuts, seafood, flax seeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds and others. These fats should account for up to 20% of your daily calorie intake.

The other 30-40% should come from carbs- mainly complex. There are two basic types of carbs- complex and simple. Generally the simple carbs are sugars and you should keep them low, and make sure that they come from natural sources such as fruits. The complex carbs are the ones that come from your veggies, nuts and grains, and are divided into two groups – fiber and starch. The starch is contained in potatoes, rice and lentils, while foods high in fiber include dark leafy greens, broccoli, avocados, squash, berries and others. As mentioned, fiber has a detox effect, and also it keeps you full for longer so the better part of your complex carbs should come from fiber.

The third way improving your diet will help fight cellulite is by reducing water retention. There are certain foods known as natural diuretics. These foods act to flush the water deposits and restore your body’s fluid balance. Great natural diuretics are carrots, beets, lemons, dark leafy greens, apples, and foods high in potassium like spinach, bananas and potatoes.

See my Healthy Diet That Gets Rid of Cellulite and Detoxifies Your Body!

 Step 3 – The Workout

Workouts have a two-pronged effect against cellulite. First they promote fat burning and second they tone the muscles and the tissue which decreases the appearance of cellulite. In fact, muscle atrophy is one of the main reasons for fat to be distributed in deposits that cause the dimpled effect of cellulite.

However, doing just any exercises won’t do the job. Most people think that endless cardio will reduce cellulite, but the fact is that you need specific, laser targeted exercises in order to do that. You need to target the areas where cellulite most commonly “hangs out”. These areas include the thighs, buttocks and hips. Exercises that will do the job include around the clock lounges, goblet squats, single leg Romanian deadlifts, single leg supine hip extension and burpees. Click here to find out how to do these exercises (videos).

Incorporate these exercises into a workout which you can do at home, outdoors, in the gym or wherever you find appropriate and do it at least 3 times a week. If you are not slackin’ you should be done in around 30 minutes. You can do it everywhere and it only takes a small part of your day a few days a week? You can’t really find excuses this time!

These 3 steps are all you need in order to be on the path to a cellulite-free life. As I said, cellulite creams, massages and other treatments are not the key, they can only be used as a supplement in order to improve results. Ultimately it all boils down to living healthy with a few special anti-cellulite tweaks added.

If you want to get some professional and proven help in getting rid of cellulite I advise you to turn to fitness expert and best-selling author of the Kick-Butt Cellulite Reduction Program, Joey Atlas.

Health Effects of The 4 Most Common Sleeping Positions

On this blog we have given great attention to the topic of insomnia and other sleeping disorders (read my beginners guide to insomnia here).

This is because one third of our day is spent sleeping, if you don't have any disorders that is. Anyway, this is one of the most important periods for your overall health and well-being. Since it is such a long and important period it only makes sense that the position you spent that one third of the day is also something to consider. In fact, your position may be causing a wide variety of problems that range from joint pain to respiratory conditions, and got forbid - wrinkles!

There are 4 common sleeping positions and most of them have a significantly different impact on your sleeping pattern and on some of the processes that occur during that period. Let's start off with one of the most popular ones- sleeping on your back.

sleeping on your backThis is a great position for people with back pain as it doesn't put any strain on your spine and neck. joint pain and arthritis. Furthermore, because it distributes your weight evenly you won't put pressure on any specific joint in your body so its also good for people with

It is also great for people with acid reflux, because it keeps your head elevated, thus your stomach is below your esophagus and food can't come up.

The last two benefits of sleeping on your back are more important to the ladies I suppose- it prevents wrinkles (because the pillow is not pushing against your face) and it prevents breast sagging.

The cons of this position are that it promotes snoring, sleep apnea (pauses in breathing), asthma and heart diseases. All of these side effects are caused by the narrowing of the throat due to the effects of gravity on it.

Sleeping on your side

This position can help minimize acid reflux and improve digestion. It is also good for people that snore and for pregnant women (because it improves blood flow to the fetus). Last but not least, it is spine friendly.

sleeping on your sideThere are a bunch of negative side effects from sleeping on your side. First, it contributes to wrinkles. More precisely, it increases the pressure on your nasolabial folds, or as you may know them- the laughter lines.  Sleeping on your side also promotes breast sagging because your breasts will be "hanging" downward, stretching the ligaments and tissue.

The side which you sleep on also seems to be important. If you sleep on your left side, you will have less problems with heartburn, but it will put more pressure on your vital organs such as the heart and liver, than it would if you are sleeping on the right side.

sleeping in a fetal positionSleeping in the fetal position

Sleeping on your side with your knees to your chest is called the fetal position. It is very good for your lower back, if you are pregnant, and It also prevents snoring.

On the downside, it can cause neck strain which could lead to tension headaches. It also prevents deep diaphragmatic breathing which can have a devastating effect on your sleep pattern and overall health. And of course, just like sleeping on your side, the fetal position promotes wrinkles.

Sleeping on your stomach
sleeping on your stomach
This is the worst positions. It stimulates acid reflux and digestive problems, causes back and neck pain, nerve compression and once again- wrinkles.

It is, however, good for people who snore and who suffer from asthma as it opens the airways.

As you see the position you sleep in really does matter, and I do realize that once you fall a sleep you probably don't have much control over your position, but I believe that if you are making a conscious effort to fall a sleep in the right position for you, then chances are that your body will get used and stick to it.

The Ultimate 5 Exercises for Improved Vision

improve vision with exerciseNowadays being an optician is better than ever. This is because the amount of people needing glasses and
contact lenses has skyrocketed thanks to the excessive use of PCs and the variety of strains introduced to our eyes on a daily basis. Furthermore, people seem to totally neglect taking care of their eyes as if having imperfect vision and wearing glasses is something normal and unavoidable. Well it actually isn't.

There are a variety of natural measures that can be taken to prevent or treat the loss of eyesight. Using your eyes the way they are meant to be used is just the starting point (I will discuss this in a later post). You can also eat an eye-healthy diet  since there are quite a few nutrients that are crucial for your vision. Additionally, you can do something even more effective- exercise your eyes.

Yes there are exercises that can improve your eyesight just like exercising a certain muscle in the gym can improve its condition. Actually, your vision is indeed dependent on the muscles in your eyes. These muscles are called the ciliary muscles and are responsible for your ability to focus on near and far objects. The tricky part is that these muscles need to be not only strong, but perfectly balanced. For example, if the muscles responsible for focusing on near objects are stronger than the ones focusing on distant, you will have nearsightedness also known as myopia.

One more point I would like to mention before getting to the exercises is that when you start using glasses your problems will only get deeper. Just think about it. If your legs are weak would it make more sense to exercise them so that they get stronger, or you would jump in a wheelchair and let them get weaker and weaker over time? Glasses to your eyes are like a wheelchair to your legs.

The exercises you will find on this list consist of flexing and relaxing your eyes, focusing on different objects and performing a variety of stimulations of your eye’s muscles. So without further ado here is the list of 5 exercises that improve your vision.

The Exercises

First I would like to start with an eye relaxation technique that you need to perform before and after your workout routine, and at any moment you feel you are putting your eyes under strain.

This technique is called Palming
palming

Palming will allow your optic nerve and the muscles of your eyes to relax by blocking all outside stimulus.

You start off by rubbing your palms to warm them up a little. Afterwards, place your hands over your eyes so that your palms are covering them and your fingers are touching your forehead. Make sure that no light reaches your eyes and then close them. Don’t apply any pressure on them (to do this place your palms in a cup-like shape).

Hold this position for 3-5 minutes. During that time take deep diaphragmatic breaths as if you are meditating. Focus on your breathing and imagine complete darkness.

The first real exercise that I will introduce is the figure eight exercise.

It is simple and convenient but it has great benefits. It greatly improves your eye muscles’ flexibility and endurance.

After relaxing your eyes by palming sit 10 feet away from a wall. Now imagine a huge figure of the number 8 on the wall. Next, turn the figure on its side, resembling the symbol for infinity .

Next, you need to trace the number slowly with both eyes. After doing it one direction for 2-3 minutes do it in the other for exactly the same time (remember - balance is key).

Forget about any feeling of awkwardness in the beginning and stick with it, the reward is worth it.

Near and far focusing

This is a great exercise that will improve on the ability of your eye the rapidly change its focus from a subject that is near to a subject that is far away from you.

First, make sure there is an object 10 or 20 feet away from you. Now get into a comfortable position so that this object is to your front. Sitting, standing it doesn't matter as long as you feel comfortable.
exercising eye

Next, stretch one of your arms out in front of you in a “thumbs-up” position. Put your thumb about 10 inches in front of you and focus on it.

Now focus on your thumb and start breathing deeply and diaphragmatically. With every breath switch your focus from your thumb to the object that is 10 to 20 feet away from you and back.

Once you get used to doing this exercise you will find that you can focus really fast without having to squint for a few seconds. Come to think of it, this skill alone can potentially save your life! On some very weird instances at least.

Zoom in Zoom Out

This is another exercise that helps improve your ability to focus on near and far objects. It is one of my favorites because you can really feel your eyes working hard and improving.

Once again start by sitting or standing comfortably. Now just like in the near and far focusing exercise stretch your arm and hold your thumb up.

This time however, your arm won’t be static. Instead once you focus on your thumb, start bringing it slowly to your face without losing your focus.

Once it gets to around 3 inches (or to the point where you can’t focus anymore) from your eyes start stretching your arm out again.

Do this for 3 to 5 minutes depending on what feels right to you.

Side to side, up, down and rotation

Imagine the face of a clock on the wall in front of you. Now start by moving your eyes from one side of the clock to the other i.e. from 3 to 9 a clock and back. Do this up to 20 times.

After you finished the side to side movements, start moving your eyes up and down i.e. from 6 to 12 and back. Do this 20 times. Don’t forget to breathe deeply during all of the exercises.

After you are finished, rest for 20 seconds and start rotating your eyes around the clock for 20 “laps” clockwise. When you are done with these laps, do 20 more counter-clockwise.

This exercise is one of the hardest and you can use it to finish off your routine.

After you are finished relax your eyes with palming for a few minutes.

Always finish up either with palming or another eye relaxation technique (I promise to introduce a few in a later post).

I hope that this post will lead you to a new attitude towards your eyes and how to take care of them. Your eyes give you so much joy and help you attain so much knowledge that it is a shame if you don’t return the favor. And trust me you don’t do that by putting on the glasses. You can do that by using them correctly, giving them a chance to relax, eating the proper foods that are rich in nutrients that are good for your eyes, and of course by exercising them regularly.

If you want to take the recovery of your eyes a step further I recommend having a look at the Vision without glasses system. It is a system of based on the methods of the famous Dr. William Horatio Bates who was the first to introduce the notion that eyeglasses are bad for your eyes and that imperfect vision can be cured with exercises.

The author, Dr. Duke Peterson, will give you all of the information you need in order to obtain the right knowledge and attitude in order to restore your vision. You will also get daily exercise routines that will take 15-20 minutes of your time.

Some other features I like are:

  • The free “Kick-Ass” eye charts you get that help you measure your results at any time.
  • The amazing customer service- you can send your questions at any time and get them answered directly by the author of the book. Having your personal consultant at arm’s length could be more beneficial than you would think.
  •  You also get the original Dr. Bates’ book for free.

I personally think that all of this is at a great price ($37) relative to the results thousands of people have reported after following the system and to the amazing feeling that reducing your diopter will give you. Therefore, I advise you to at least have a look at it and decide for yourself if it’s worth it.

If You Want to Get Rid of Nail Fungus Try These 5 Healthy and Effective Herbal Treatments

cure fungus with 5 herbsSuffering from nail fungus? You are not alone! Over 35 million people face the nasty and stubborn infection
and many of them have tried ineffective or unhealthy treatments only to worsen their overall health. In this post I will tell you about 5 effective and healthy herbal treatments for nail fungus and how to prepare them.

What is Nail Fungus?

This is the most usual disease of the nails. It is a fungal infection that affects one or more of your toe or fingernails. The typical symptoms include crumbling edges, thickening and discoloration of the nail. It may also cause pain and foul smell.

Causes for Nail Fungus

Most commonly nail fungus is caused by fungi. These microscopic organisms get into the skin through tiny separations or small cuts between the nail bad and the nail. The warm and moist environment they find there is perfect not only for their survival but for their growth as well.

As mentioned, fungi love warm and moist environment so baths (public especially), swimming pools and steam rooms are some of the places you need to avoid or at least be careful when using them.

The main reasons people get infected with nail fungus include wearing sweaty or wet trainers, living in a humid and warm climate, having a poor immune system, damaged nails and others.

Treatments of Nail Fungus

Traditional medicine treats nail fungus with oral medications, topical medications and surgery (in very severe cases).

The oral medications are an effective way to cure the infection, but they should only be used on moderate to severe cases due to their side effects which include liver damage and skin rashes. Some of the most effective pills are terbinafine (Lamisil) and itraconazole (Sporanox).

Topical medications are used for milder cases of nail fungus and to prevent the reoccurrence of the infection. They are normally in the form of creams, gels and lotions and are applied on the nail and the skin around it. Some of the best topical medications include terbinafine (Lamisil) and ciclopirox (Penlac)

Nail fungus surgery is the act of removing the infected nail and is only used in very severe and extremely painful cases. Once the nail is removed you have to wait up to an year for the new one to grow and in the meantime you should still apply topical medications (or the herbal treatments you will read about in a second) to prevent the infection from returning.

beautiful nails without fungusAs you have probably noticed if you have been reading my blogs, I always prefer treating any condition with natural means or at least medications that are 100% natural. This case is no different. There are some very effective natural treatments for nail fungus and in this post I will focus on 5 herbal remedies.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is great for treating nail fungus and a variety of other infections thanks to its antiseptic and antifungal properties. In order to treat your nail fungus you just need to dilute it by mixing it with almond oil, olive oil or thyme oil. After that rub the oil on the affected area for 10 minutes and then scrub the nail with a tooth brush. This herbal treatment can be especially useful if the infection is still fresh.

Garlic

Garlic is known to be quite the antifungal and antibiotic herb. This is mainly thanks to a compound called allicin, which possesses strong fungicide properties. For maximum results use both internal and external garlic treatment. Internal treatment of course means that you should eat at least a clove of garlic a day. An external treatment can be done in a variety of ways. You can create your own garlic oil by crushing garlic cloves and mixing them with olive oil, you can make a garlic juice and rub it into the affected area with a cotton ball, and you can also crush a clove and again rub it on your nail. This two-way treatment (external and internal) will help you get rid of the persistent nail fungus and improve your overall health and immune system.

Oregano Oil
essential oils

Oregano is an herb with very strong fungicidal, anti-bacterial, anti-parasitical and anti-viral properties. They make its oil a very effective treatment for nail fungus.  It is especially important to dilute this particular oil because it is very strong and will irritate your skin.

As with the other oils you can use a carrier. Your cheapest option is olive oil, but if you don’t mind spending some more cash you can go with jojoba oil as it is very beneficial to the skin. Just mix 2-3 drops of oregano oil with a teaspoon your carrier oil and rub it over the affected nail.

Lavender Oil

Lavender oil is yet another essential oil that has the potential of being a great remedy for various skin infections. Treating specifically nail fungus with it has been backed with several studies. First, a study that was conducted in the University of Coimbra (Portugal) discovered that thanks to several compounds, lavender oil is able to stop the growth of the fungi and damage their cell membranes causing them to die off. Another study, published in the Medical Mycology (scientific journal) showed that the essential oil had the ability to cure nail fungus thanks to its antiseptic properties.

In order to treat your infection with lavender oil, you need to take equal amounts of it and a carrier such as olive oil and warm them slightly. Once it’s warm just dab it with a cotton ball under, on top and around your nail up to 3 times a day.

Lemongrass

This herb is being used to treat nail fungus thanks to its antiseptic, anti-fungal, astringent, anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties. Many people report that it kills the fungus bacteria within minutes after being applied. A sign of this is the way the area around the nail turns black.
herbsAgain, before applying lemongrass oil, you should dilute it with a proper carrier oil. After that just rub it into the nail.

All of these herbal treatments can provide cheap and effective substitutes for the traditional medications. Most importantly they are side effect free if used correctly. If you are consistent with them they can really help you get rid of one of the most annoying and persistent conditions.

Another great natural treatment that I love to recommend to people that want to achieve fast results is ZetaClear. It is a topical solution and an oral homeopathic spray. You are already familiar with some of its ingredients.

The topical cream contains and the homeopathic spray contain ingredients like tea tree oil, jojoba oil, vitamin E oil, clove oil, lemongrass oil. Thanks to the spray you are able to get these and other natural infection cures in your bloodstream and attack the fungus from the inside as well as from the outside.

I really believe that such a system is the next best thing (right after the herbs I recommended) and thanks to the combination of a spray and a topical solution it can do wonders for you. I know many people who are extremely happy not only with how effectively it treated their fungus, but also how beautiful their nails and skin looked after that. But enough about that, if you want to read more visit ZetaClear’s official page here.

I hope that I was able to help you out with my suggestions and I will be very grateful if you propose your own treatments in the comment box or just let us know how these herbs worked for you. Thanks for reading and good luck.

Find Out How The Amazing Chia Seeds Are Able To Cure Digestive Problems Like Acid Reflux, IBS and GI

chia seeds and people with digestive problemsThere is an entire variety of digestive problems that can really mess with your health, personal life and happiness.

There’s the irritable bowel syndrome with its constant gas, bloating, pain and diarrhea. There’s acid reflux with its constant heartburn and diet limitations. There’s gastrointestinal inflammation with its constant nausea, cramping and diarrhea. And these digestive problems are just a few of the many.

Obviously, to ensure overall health, it may be smart to start from your digestive system. How exactly do you do that?

As always I love to focus on natural remedies. This time it would be a rather surprising one. It should be something that contains the minerals that sooth the gastrointestinal tract and improve digestion (potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium and iron), antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. What would this be? Perhaps there are quite a few choices, but my personal favorite is the amazing Chia seed.

What Are Chia Seeds?

I am surprised you are not familiar with one of the newest superfoods. It has really gained popularity and reputation in the last few years, being featured in The Dr. Oz Show, Oprah magazine and generally in many respected health authorities. The reason it’s been on the spotlight? It is an absolute nutritional powerhouse! Containing over 27 different types of minerals and vitamins, an amount of healthy fats compared to that of flaxseeds, a high quality protein, more antioxidants than blueberries (gram for gram), an incredible amount of fiber, great taste and very easy and fast to add to practically every meal.

Read my post about chia seeds here! Read my 10 favorite ways to eat chia seeds here!

With all this said, let’s focus on a specific benefit of chia seeds- its ability to improve digestion and prevent digestive problems.

 IBS and Chia Seeds

So what exactly is IBS? Irritable bowel syndrome is a functional disorder of the bowel.  Its either constipation predominant, diarrhea predominant or abdominal pain predominant. Each name comes from the symptom that accompanies the condition. Besides these symptoms it also includes gas, bloating, fatigue, headache and depression. It is thought to be caused by either stress or gastrointestinal infections.

Read more about the symptoms, causes and treatments of IBS here!

woman with ibs

What can chia do to help ease the symptoms of IBS? A number of nutrients abundant in chia seeds are said to help people with IBS.

One of them is the mineral magnesium. It is great for people with constipation predominant IBS as it ensures regular bowel movement.

Another great mineral that chia is rich in is phosphorus. It relieves bloating and indigestion, and is a great treatment for people with bowel movement disorders like diarrhea and constipation.

Chia seeds also contain a good amount of potassium – an electrolyte responsible for intestinal contractions. These contractions are essential for waste elimination, digestion and nutrient absorption.

All of these nutrients and the high amounts of fiber work together to soothe your gastrointestinal tract, improve digestion and relieve the symptoms of IBS.

Acid Reflux and Chia Seeds

So what exactly is acid reflux? This is a condition in which the contents of your stomach reflux (rise back) into the esophagus. This occurs because the valve that separates the stomach from the esophagus doesn’t work properly and allows food to claim up the esophagus. Its main symptom is the burning chest pain.

Read my post on what is acid reflux!

man with acid refluxHow can chia help people suffering from acid reflux? Chia seeds have the amazing ability to absorb water and turn into a gel. When this happens in your stomach, the gel seems to protect its walls from the acids, thus relieving the pain and preventing ulcers. Just make sure you drink enough water so you don’t get dehydrated after the chia seeds have absorbed it.

The antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids in these powerful little seeds also provide anti-inflammatory benefits, thus soothing your acid reflux.

Another nutritional benefit is the high amounts of iron. Iron deficiency is linked to acid reflux because of the bleeding that occurs due to the acids. This bleeding causes lots of iron to be lost and symptoms like fatigue, weakness, irritability and others.

Chia seeds also pack a great amount of calcium. Although calcium doesn't have an antacid effect, it does strengthen the esophagus valve, thus lowering the amount of acids that reflux.

Read my post on 6 natural acid reflux remedies!

Read my post on a natural 3 way acid reflux treatment!

Gastrointestinal Inflammation and Chia Seeds

So what exactly is GI Inflammation? It is a digestive ailment with similar to IBS symptoms- constipation, gas, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, poor nutrition absorption and others. This is caused by an inflammation of the lining of the gastrointestinal tract.

So what can chia do for people diagnosed with GI inflammation? The same nutrients we already mention work great to soothe the GI tract and improve digestion. This will help relieve many of the symptoms and help you get back to your normal lifestyle.

As you see the magnificent chia seeds are capable of curing your digestive problems and improving your life, health and happiness significantly. All of that by just eating a tablespoon of seeds? Sounds like its totally worth it doesn't it? If you agree with me have a look at the best organic chia seeds at chia.digestivescience.com

You Think Something As Simple As Eating Broccoli Can't Fight Osteoarthritis? Then Read This

broccoliOsteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. This degenerative joint disease (DJD), is caused by a
loss of cartilage (tissue that makes up our joint and allows it to absorb movements, so that our bones don’t rub into each other) and resulting in the development joint inflammations.

Symptoms of osteoarthritis include joint pain, swelling and stiffness.

The joints in the arms, knees, back and feet are the ones most commonly affected by the disease.

After this brief introduction to osteoarthritis it’s time to move to the main topic of this post- one of our favorite superfoods – broccoli, can be used to treat this unforgiving joint disease!

It turns out that according to University of East Anglia scientists, broccoli are great for people with osteoarthritis and should be included in the treatment of the disease. These results were acquired through 3 different laboratory studies.

These studies showed that a compound known as sulforaphane, also found in cabbage and Brussels sprouts, helps switch off genes that have a destructive effect on cartilage.  Another way sulforaphane helps protect the joints is by suppressing the growth and development of a dangers pathogen (a microorganism causing infections) called Helicobacter pylori. This pathogen is responsible for inflammations and ulcers, and as I mentioned above, osteoarthritis and joint inflammations come together.

The scientists are uncertain whether eating broccoli could be enough to reverse the effects of osteoarthritis, however, they are certain that it can prevent its progression (or its development to begin with).

Get Rid Of Cellulite and Detox Your Body With This Healthy Diet

diet for cellulite Normally looking great involves losing fat and toning your muscles, however for some people there is a much harder task at hand- getting rid of the persistent and nasty fat and water deposits called cellulite.

The reason I say that getting rid of cellulite is much harder than building muscle and losing fat is because it involves doing both, plus adding the additional need of detoxification. Yes that’s right, many health experts and nutritionists nowadays believe that cellulite is caused by a buildup of toxins, most of which come from your diet. This means that carving the sexy cellulite-free legs, arms and butt will only happen by carving the proper diet.

So here is the list of magnificent foods that will help you detox, lose fat and get rid of cellulite!

Whole grains

picture of whole grainsHow would foods such as brown rice and quinoa aid you in the war against cellulite?

Thanks to their lower glycemic index (relative to refined grains) these foods don’t cause a jump in your insulin levels, which is also known as an insulin spike. Insulin spikes contribute to your cellulite by making your body store more fats. Moreover, whole grains are a great option thanks to their low fat and high fiber contents. The fiber has two great effects- first it cleanses your body (exactly what you need) and it also fills you up faster and keeps you full for longer.

Of course keep in mind that although whole foods are much less likely to cause an insulin spike compared to refined grains, they can still do it if consumed in great amounts.

Raw foods

picture of raw foodsDoing a raw food diet for a couple of days from time to time is a terrific way to detoxify.

The reason raw foods are preferred to just going vegan (or vegetarian) for a couple of days, is because cooking your food robs it from much of its nutritional value.

I also do a raw food diet for 3 days occasionally and it feels great! It was only hard the first time, now it’s just a walk in the park so don’t look so terrified! Just give it a go.

Water

picture of waterOne of the simplest ways to reduce body fat and detoxify is water. I just can’t stress enough how important water is.

First of all, water helps you eliminate the waste in your system. As we pointed out above, toxic buildup is one of the major reasons for cellulite.

Second, when you don’t get enough water, your liver has to jump in and help with the detoxification process, which distracts it from one of its main duties-the metabolism of fat cells. This means that drinking more water = more burned fats!

Another reason to drink more water is to prevent yourself from drinking the wrong type of beverages. Sodas, fruit juices with added sweeteners, alcohol and so on, contain loads of sugar (insulin spike!) and toxins so you need to avoid them at all costs! If you really want to get rid of cellulite that is…

image of citrus fruitsCitrus fruits

Oranges, limes and especially lemons are known to be great detoxifiers. In fact this is the very reason nutritionists around the world recommend beginning your day with a glass of water and freshly squeezed
lemon in it.

Natural diuretics

As I pointed out consuming more water is one of the keys to getting rid of cellulite; however, water is actually one of the main reasons for cellulite in the first place! As I mentioned in the beginning cellulite is caused by fat and water deposits. We’ve mentioned a few good ways to reduce the fats, but what about the water? The only way to flush out these water deposits is through minimizing water retention in your body. Instead of drinking less water you should go for foods that remove the water and restore your body’s fluid balance. These foods are known as diuretics. Some great diuretics include carrots, celery, leafy green veggies, peppers, beets, lemons, oats and apple cider vinegar. Also you may want to consume foods high in the mineral potassium. Such foods include bananas, potatoes and spinach.

This was the last entry in our list of foods that will help you get rid of cellulite. Besides these you should also include foods rich in antioxidants such as berries, carrots, peaches, plums, grapes and others. They fight free radicals and get rid of toxins.

Tomatoes

tomatoesThey are a great source of bioflavonoids (just like citrus fruits). Bioflavonoids have the effect of strengthening your capillaries, which helps more blood reach every part of your body (including those that have cellulite) and bring valuable nutrients. Blood circulation is also known to be a great detoxifier (which is why cellulite massages do work to a small extent).

Tomatoes are also very rich in the skin healthy vitamin A and in antioxidants that directly fight toxins.

Herbal teas

herbal teasI know you’ve read that caffeine gets rid of cellulite, and it kind of does to a small extent (again). So telling you to substitute your daily latte for a herbal tea will sound crazy on too many levels, however, the only way caffeine can fight cellulite is by rubbing it into the affected areas (not by drinking it). On the other hand teas can really have a great detox effect. Green tea, lemon balm, chamomile and ginger teas are known to flush the toxins right out of your system (and some of them do contain some caffeine to get you going). Trust me, it’s worth it!

Nuts and seeds

nuts and seedsAlmonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, chia seeds (my personal favorite) and pumpkin seeds are jam packed of vitamin E which is great for your skin. Better yet, vitamin E is known to be one of the strongest antioxidants. As such it is very efficient in fighting free radicals (toxins). Another way these nuts and seeds will help you is with their high fat content. Wait what?!

All fats are not made equal! Saturated fats will add to your cellulite, however, the fats in nuts, seeds, fish, avocado and olive oil, are known as healthy fats. They don’t contribute to your cellulite; in fact they may help you get rid of it thanks to their fat burning effect. Yes eating fats can help you burn more fats! Only if you don’t get carried away with them that is...

Follow this healthy diet and you will not only cleanse your body from the toxins, but also burn more fats. And of course, to top it all off, don’t forget to do the top 5 cellulite reducing exercises! Also, I invite you to read my The 3 Crucial Steps That Truly Get Rid of Cellulite post

Discover How To Get Rid Of Your Bloated Six Pack

bodybuilders with pregnant abs
I bet many of you have seen this, either on other people or on themselves. You see this person with a low fat percentage and great six pack abs, however, their belly is still sticking out. If you actually see this person with his shirt on, you would never assume that he is lean, in fact you will probably think that he is fat.

Why Does it Happen

This bulging in the stomach area may be a symptom of things like food intolerance, steroid abuse (that’s why some bodybuilders look like they are pregnant), improper posture, organ inflammation (even pancreatic cancer) and others. In this post we will have a look at one particular reason- weak abdominal muscles.

Now you are probably asking how the heck can I say that having a bloated 6 pack belly would mean that your abdominal muscles are weak, right? Well this one is simple. The fact is that when we talk about abdominal muscles most people only take into account their superficial ab muscles – the Rectus Abdominus. This is your six pack. However, besides this muscle, there are also inner abdominal muscles, that are unseen for the naked eye. These muscles are the Transversus Abdominus and the Lumbar Multifidus. They are responsible for back support, deep breathing and you guessed it… keeping your belly tucked in by pulling the deep abdominal wall.

Now that you know about these two muscles, you need to find out how to make the stronger.

How Train the Inner Abdominal Muscles

Unfortunately, the famous ab movements like sit ups, crunches, leg raises and so forth will not do the job. What will actually do it is a yoga exercise used by some of the thinnest waists in bodybuilding (Arnold Schwarzenegger and Frank Zane)- the stomach vacuum.

What is the Stomach Vacuum
frank zane vacuum pose

The stomach vacuum is an isometric exercise known as the forgotten ab exercise. Isometric means that during such an exercise you have to hold a position for as long as you can (as opposed to going through a range of motion). Its known as the forgotten ab exercise because back in the golden era of bodybuilding almost every successful bodybuilder used to do it, but now its popularity has faded away.

How to Do the Stomach Vacuum

The stomach vacuum is very simple to do and doesn’t require any equipment. It is also very convenient- you can do it while watching TV, driving, taking a shower or whenever and wherever you like.

In order to do a stomach vacuum you need to exhale all of the air in your lungs and pull in your stomach as much as you can. Remember to keep your back straight and expand your chest as much as you can. Hold this position for as long as possible and release. This counts as a rep. Do from 5-10 reps, depending on your conditioning.

You can perform the exercise standing, lying, seating or kneeling, as long as you keep your back straight.

I personally like to do it standing. Another thing I like is doing it on an empty stomach. This way you can avoid indigestion and you can have a more effective exercise.

Here is a video so you can get a better idea of what I am talking about

Benefits of Doing the Stomach Vacuum

The main benefit of this exercise is the shrinkage of your waist. People report losing up to 4 inches in as little as a month.

However, there is another very important benefit, especially for heavy lifters. The inner abdominal muscles that are tightened by the stomach vacuum form a biological belt around your core. This belt is nature’s weight lifting belt, and protects you when doing heavy compound movements like squats and deadlifts, or whenever you are lifting something heavy in your everyday life.

Other benefits include internal organ massage, improved digestion and lower back support.

As you can see having a smaller waist and a flat stomach doesn’t necessarily include countless of crunches. What it includes is taking care of every layer of your muscles (not just the superficial ones) in order to have a fully developed and healthy physique. Try this out and see if it works for you.

Good luck

7 Crucial Nutrients for Improved Eyesight

girl with glassesCurrently I am reading a book known as “Vision without Glasses” which is based on Dr. Bates’ method of
correcting imperfect eyesight. It’s a really interesting book and I truly recommend it to everyone.
Anyway, while I was reading this book I started thinking about all the things people do to protect their health and to improve their appearance, but how little they do to protect and improve one of the most important functions of their body- their eyesight.

When most people consider their diet, they think of how the food they eat will affect their weight, energy, cardiovascular health, cholesterol and so forth. One thing, however, that most people don’t think about is supplying the proper nutrition for outstanding eye health. Yes vision loss is not inevitable and with the right measures it can be prevented (or at least postponed).

One of these measures is making sure that you get enough of the following 7 nutrients.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin

Lutein and Zeaxanthin are carotenoids that act as sunscreen for your eyes, thus preventing light-induced oxidative damage that leads to macular degeneration.

In addition they are also capable of preventing the formation of cataracts.

These two antioxidants can be found in many fruits and vegetables, and also in the human eye’s macula (I definitely advise you to focus on the first two sources!). The best food sources of Lutein and Zeaxanthin are kale, spinach, paprika, corn, eggs, broccoli, papaya, oranges and others.

Vitamin A

nutrition that improves eyesightVitamin A is essential for good vision because it protects the surface of the eye.

Studies also show that eye drops containing vitamin A are very effective for dry eyes treatment.
In combination with other antioxidants, Vitamin A, also appears to play a role in decreasing the risk of macular degeneration.

In the landmark Age-Related Eye Disease Study (which the National Eye Institute sponsored), patients at high risk for the disease took a daily multi-vitamin that included vitamin A (as beta carotene), vitamin E, vitamin C, copper, and zinc had a 25%  reduced risk of advanced macular degeneration during a 6-year period.

Another study also showed that people suffering from retinitis pigmentosa (RP) may have a prolonged vision thanks to a combination of Lutein and Vitamin A.

Foods rich on vitamin A are liver, paprika, sweet potatoes, carrots, dark leafy greens and others.

Vitamin E

This vitamin helps guard the membranes of the cells throughout your entire body (including the eyes) against damage caused by the notorious free radicals.

Studies show that taking vitamin E may also act to reduce the development of macular degeneration with around 25%.

A combination of vitamin E and C is also a good way to treat uveitis (an inflammation of the uvea, which is the middle layer). A clinical study of a group of subjects having uveitis found that those who took the vitamins (E and C) had clearer vision than the subjects who took a placebo.

In addition, vitamin E is also thought to help decrease the risk of developing cataracts. Great sources of vitamin E are sunflower seeds, almonds, peanuts, paprika, dried apricots and others.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a very powerful antioxidant and a water-soluble vitamin. It helps the body form and maintain connective tissue and collagen which is found in the cornea of the eye.

Studies show that long-term consumption of vitamin C reduces the risk of vision loss from macular degeneration and forming cataracts.

This vitamin is abundant in fruits and vegetables, the richest among which are red bell peppers, berries, papaya, citrus fruits and broccoli.

Zinc

eyesightHigh levels of this mineral are found in the macula. One of its main benefits for your eye’s health is that it
enables vitamin A to produce melanin- a pigment known to protect the eye. It also helps the absorption of vitamin E.

Zinc is also used by many of the enzymes that have important eye functions.

Finally, it offers protection from macular degeneration.

Foods with high content of Zinc include oysters, other see-food, wheat germ, pumpkin seeds and my personal favorite chia seeds.

Selenium

Low levels of Selenium have been shown to lead to a decrease in vision and many other eye diseases like cataract, nyctalopia, retinopathy, and so on.

It is also another mineral that helps the absorption of vitamin E. Sources you can turn to are Brazil nuts, tuna fish, shellfish, beef, poultry and eggs.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

A number of studies show that omega 3 fatty acids can help protect adult eyes from the already mentioned macular degeneration and dry eye syndrome.

Essential fatty acids also decrease the risk of glaucoma and high eye pressure by improving drainage of intraocular fluid from the eye.

A specific type of Omega 3 called DHA may have shown to prevent age-related vision loss in a recent study. A toxic molecule that accumulates in the retina of the eye with age did not do so in tests of lab mice that received DHA supplements. This toxin’s build up, that normally would cause vision loss, was seemed to be fully prevented by the DHA. This omega 3 fatty acid is found in fish such as sardines, mackerel, and salmon.

Other great sources of omega 3 include chia seeds, flax seeds, walnuts and sea food.

This concludes my list of the 7 nutrients that improve eyesight. Taking proper care of our eyes is one of the most important and most underestimated health issues. Really, being fit and energetic is great, but being able to see properly is absolutely vital! If you want to have a look at a great system, designed to improve your eyesight click here!

Good luck and SEE you later ;)

  • Strawberries are recommended to people who suffer from high blood pressure, avitaminosis, type-2 diabetes, gout and constipation.

Bananas

    banana
  • It’s not a secret that bananas charge us with an instant boost of energy, but not many people know that they also provide an instant boost in… our mood. This is thanks to the high levels of tryptophan, which turns into serotonin and makes us happy!
  • Bananas are also great for your digestion. They provide relief for ulcers and acid reflux. They also have a probiotic effect- boosting the growth of healthy bacteria in the intestine.
  • Bananas are highly recommended before going in for a swim. They can actually save your life by preventing the dreaded muscle cramps

  • Some of the compounds in blueberries have shown to prevent urinary tract infections.
  • They also reduce brain damage, thus preventing Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Improve cardiovascular health by reducing the levels of LDL cholesterol

Watermelon

My favorite fruit for the hot summer days! It turns out that it is not only refreshing and delicious but also very healthy!

    watermelon
  • Watermelon is a certified heart healthy food (by the American Heart Association). This is due to the fact that out of all the fresh fruits, watermelon has the highest amount of lycopene and a very high amount of citrulline. Both of these compounds maintain the heart’s health and the arteries and blood vessels’ flexibility.
  • Citrulline is also known to expand the blood vessels, which is the effect of all aphrodisiacs. Therefore, watermelons are a great natural cure for impotence. This effect of citrulline also decreases blood pressure.
  • Watermelons are also very rich in anti-oxidants like the mentioned above lycopene, and also vitamin C and A. This makes it great for cancer prevention and anti-aging.
  • It’s a great detoxifier because it helps wash off the toxins stored in the kidneys. Another benefit for the kidneys is the fact that watermelons reduce the chances of forming kidney stones by lowering the concentration of uric acid in the blood. It also helps regular bowel movement
  • Besides anti-oxidants and vitamin A and C, watermelon is also rich in vitamin B, which is great for the nerves, energy levels, fat metabolism and others. It also has high amounts of potassium and magnesium.

Kiwi

    kiwi
  •  Kiwi is a great source of folic acid, which is very important during pregnancy because it prevents pregnancy defects and ensures proper development of the baby.
  • It is very rich in anti-oxidants and especially vitamin C. We have already discussed what anti-oxidants do for you, so I will just mention that gram for gram kiwi has more vitamin C than oranges!
  • Some of the phytonutrients in kiwi have the quality of repairing your DNA. DNA damage is a main reason for diseases such as cancers.
  • The tasty fruit is rich in fibers which as we mentioned above is very important for weight loss and proper bowel movement.
  • Contains high amounts of potassium and magnesium.
  • Kiwi contains enzymes that revers cell damage and improve digestion.
  • It’s also good for your eyes. This is thanks to the lutein and zeaxanthin. Two chemicals contained in both the human eye and in kiwi.

Grapes

    grapes
  • Grapes are very rich in an anti-oxidant known as resveratrol. This chemical is sometimes referred to as “the new fountain of youth” or “revers-it-all”. It has a wide variety of benefits but it is most potent in fighting inflammation, cancers and preventing cardiovascular diseases (this is the main reason why one glass of wine a day is considered heart healthy).
  • Another anti-oxidant, anthocyanins, is present in grapes. Besides anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties, this anti-oxidant possesses the interesting ability to fight allergies.
  • Grapes support the recovery of cells and muscles, which is great for people who work out often.
  • Eating grapes can make you smarter! Studies show that it increases blood flow to the brain by up to 200%
  • Grapes also contain 3 very important minerals - copper, iron and manganese.
  • The vitamins found in grapes are vitamin-A, vitamin K, vitamin C, carotenoids and B-complex vitamins

Mangos

    mango
  • Mangos are yet another fruit that is helpful in preventing cancer. The anti-oxidants present in this fruit are known to specifically protect against leukemia, breast, colon and prostate cancers.
  • The high amounts of Vitamin C, pectin and fiber have the ability to lower the bad LDL cholesterol.
  • Another eye healthy fruit in this list! Thanks to the abundance of Vitamin A, mangos prevent dry eyes and night blindness.
  • Eating mangoes also has an alkalizing effect. This is caused by the malic, tantric and citric acids found in the fruit. Keeping your body in an alkaline state is thought as a key in preventing many diseases.
  • Mangos are also great for the skin. The above mentioned Vitamin A and also the mineral zinc (which mangos are rich in) are great for keeping your skin radiant and for preventing acne. You can also use the peel of the fruit and rub it into your skin. This will have a rejuvenating effect on it.
  • Thanks to the high amounts of Vitamin E, mangos are also capable of improving your sex drive!
  • The tropical fruit is great for your digestion. We mentioned that it is very rich in fiber, but that’s not all. It also contains loads of digestive enzymes and probiotics.
  • Other minerals and vitamins contained by mangos include iron, copper, potassium, manganese, vitamin B-6 and carotenoids.
  • Oh and I almost forgot. Thanks to vitamin B-6, who is essential for the production of an amino acid called GABA, mangos have a calming effect on the brain and the central nervous system.

Read about the benefits of African mangos here!

Cherries

    cherries
  • One very interesting benefit of cherries is that they improve your circadian rhythm which is a 24 hour cycle controlled by your biological clock. This is thanks to the Melatonin contained in the delicious red fruits. Melatonin is a compound that is of crucial importance for a good night sleep. Read more about the connection between the circadianrhythm and insomnia here!
  •  Thanks to two very powerful anti-oxidants (anthocyanins and bioflavonoids), cherries are a great way to relieve joint pain caused by arthritis or gouts. This happens because these anti-oxidant have the ability to slow down the enzymes Cyclo-oxyygenase-1 and -2, thus preventing joint pain. They also have very strong anti-inflammatory properties
  • Cherries are great for people who suffer from diabetes, because they lower the blood sugar levels.
  •  A delicious way to keep your brain in shape! Cherries have been linked to improved memory and overall brain health.
  •  They also cure migraines. Thanks to compounds with very similar effects to the ones from taking ibuprofen and aspirin.
  •  Of course the anti-oxidants contained in cherries also have anti-aging and anti-cancer effects (especially good in preventing colon cancer thanks to a compound known as quercetin)
  •  Some of the nutrients contained in cherries are fiber, Vitamin A, B, C and E, and the minerals iron, potassium and magnesium.

This is my list of the top 10 fruits that everyone should eat.

Keep in mind that there is no ranking! I don’t believe there is “a best” and “a worst” fruit in this list, because they all have their unique benefits, and what’s best for one person might not be the same for another. That’s why you need to consume all of these fruits and others who didn’t find their place in this list (for one reason or another). You should absolutely make variety your best friend!

Other fruits you should make room for in your menu include pineapples, acai berry (in fact all berries are great and should be consumed), pears, figs, avocados, pumpkin, tomatoes (yes they are fruits), cantaloupe, grapefruits, oranges, lemons, papaya, prune and whatever else your heart desires!

A Little Known Fact- Ginger Can Help Treat Asthma Flare Ups!

gingerIncluding Ginger to asthma medications can increase their effectiveness.

Asthma is a chronic disease of the lungs.  It causes your airways to swell and ultimately causing you to have a harder time breathing in and out. Asthma flare ups can vary in intensity and can be caused by a host of factors including allergies, stress, cigarette smoke, obesity and others.

Flare ups can occur from up to a few times a day to a few times a month. It is very important that the causes of these flare ups are identified and avoided as much as possible.

For more info on asthma, symptoms, what causes it and how to treat it click here!

Scientists have discovered that components in Ginger interact with the Beta Agonists, thus making it far easier for them to relax your respiratory muscles and restore normal breathing.

Beta Agonists work by relaxing the respiratory muscles and opening up the airways, thus allowing more air into the lungs and restoring normal breathing.

The unraveling of the way some of Ginger’s compounds work show that we may be able to find a much more effective and side-effect free asthma treatment medication.

In the research, scientists took samples of tissue from a person suffering from asthma. This sample was treated with the Beta Agonist isoproterenol and 3 different Ginger compounds- 6-Gingerol , 8-Gingerol and 6-Shogaol.

The results showed that out of the three, 6-Shogaol is the component of Ginger that magnified the Beta Agonist’s relaxing effect on the muscles around the airways the most.

All three components, however, possessed the property of suppressing an enzyme, known to cause asthma flare ups.

The data and the results of the research are presented in the annual American Thoracic Society conference in Philadelphia.
